Polyethylene is a type of polyolefin, namely a single monomer film formed with the addition of ethylene during the polymerization process. Polyethylene or PE is commonly used for various types of packaging, such as shrink film and stretch film.
Some types of PE that are commonly used are High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), and Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE). The following are the complete differences between the three types of PE:
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
HDPE is made from petroleum, and because it has strong durability, HDPE is widely used in various industries from food to construction. HPDE is usually recycled in its rigid and flexible forms, having the resin identification code #2.
HDPE is the strongest, most resistant and least flexible type compared to the other two types of PE. Apart from that, HDPE also has strong resistance to temperature changes and is suitable for wrapping food.
Some applications for using HDPE include:
- Food and drink: milk and juice bottles, bread bags, etc
- Household products: trash cans, ice boxes, children’s toys, etc
- Fibers and textiles: ropes, nets for fishing or sports, cables, etc
- Pipes: gas pipes, water, drainage, sewage, etc.
Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
LDPE has a lower density than HDPE, meaning its mass is less than its volume. LDPE material is also easy to recycle, especially in its rigid form, such as bottles or containers.
LDPE has strong resistance to impact, humidity, chemicals and weather changes. LDPE is also suitable for wrapping food and is used in the form of shrink film or stretch film.
LDPE is quite flexible and can be used to wrap various types of surfaces. But its resistance to punctures is quite low compared to the other two types.
Some applications for using LDPE include:
- Packaging: bottles, plastic bags, film for food packaging (frozen and dry)
- Pipes: water pipes, hoses etc
- Household appliances
- Flexible toy
- Cable
Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)
LLDPE is the most widely used in the packaging industry. Among all the types of Polyethylene film above, LLDPE is the most flexible.
LLDPE is usually used for needs that require high strength and resistance to punctures or tears, such as plastic covering carpets.
Even though it doesn’t have a good shrink rate compared to other types of PE, LLDPE is suitable for use as a stretch film that can protect products during the shipping process. LLDPE material has high durability, is water and impact resistant, and is suitable for wrapping heavy objects.
Some applications for using LLDPE include stretch film and clothing packaging, snacks and frozen food.
The advantage of using polyethylene material for shrink film is its strength and durability for large and heavy products. Apart from that, this type of film can also be printed with high quality images or logos.
The thickness of PE is also higher than POF and PVC, the ratio can reach 12:1. So even though the shrink rate and level of transparency are low, PE is still a suitable choice for packaging.
